There was a time when Gawker Media ruled the internet.
At its peak, the digital media company operated massively popular sites like Gawker, Jezebel, Deadspin, Kotaku, Gizmodo, and Lifehacker, dominating the internet landscape in every area of pop culture, gossip, and tech.
Started by British Internet entrepreneur, journalist, and blogger Nick Denton, the once digital behemoth was later involved in a very public privacy lawsuit brought by WWE star Hulk Hogan (with significant backing from billionaire Peter Thiel), which reportedly pushed the company into bankruptcy.
But well before that, Denton once ran his media empire from his own New York City apartment, a swanky SoHo condo that the media mogul has rightfully likened to a 5-star hotel.
“For the last few years, I’ve been shuttling back and forth between Europe and New York. So, I compare the apartment to hotels in London and Paris,” Denton says. “And so I appreciate our home even more.”
“Croissants for breakfast from the French bakery across the way, business meetings in the red-leather booths in Balthazar, and Equinox just a block away — better than any hotel gym. Five stars!” he adds, referencing the condo’s location on SoHo’s sought-after Crosby Street.
As the former Gawker Media founder is planning to relocate his family back to Europe, he’s now putting his New York City pad up for sale.
Listed for $3,500,000 with Pamela D’Arc of Compass, the 2,152-square-foot apartment has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, with towering 12-foot-9-inch ceilings and wraparound southeast-facing windows.
Featuring historic elements (like cast iron columns and a striking wooden beam) and modern updates like a stainless steel-clad chef’s kitchen, the SoHo apartment has a tranquil primary suite with a Japanese soaking tub and rain shower.
“My favorite room is the nook, opposite the bedroom in the master suite,” Denton shares, while also highlighting the unique nature of the neighborhood.
“It’s where I do my work and watch the trucks make deliveries with the kids on Crosby Street. Suburban kids might be into dogs and cats; ours are city kids whose first words in the morning are ‘truck’ and ‘fire engine.’”
