Today, The Architect’s Newspaper announces the opening of ArchWork, a new online marketplace for architecture-inspired art. This collection debuts with dozens of prints—from archival deep cuts by well-known architects to pieces by up-and-coming talents—available for purchase at affordable prices.
Curated by the The Architect’s Newspaper, ArchWork launches with works from two featured galleries a83 Editions and VanDeb Editions, with prints by artists and architects including Thom Mayne/Morphosis, Richard Pasquarelli, Steve Stankiewicz, Frank Gehry, and many others. Also included are works offered from the artist-run design shop Ray New York.
Diana Darling, CEO/creative director of The Architect’s Newspaper, developed the online platform to offer world-class art that is by architects or inspired by architecture, giving consumers and interior designers a new option for decorative needs.
“For many years, I have been a collector of art, ephemera, and design objects,” Darling explained. “I have many friends who are interested in architecture-oriented artwork. It just made sense for AN to curate independent galleries that originate collections oriented to the architecture-minded art collector. Who else to take on this project other than The Architect’s Newspaper?”
Prints From a83, on a Mission To Promote Architecture, Art, and Design
One of the galleries featured in ArchWork’s launch include a83, the New York–based organization with a mission to exhibit, publish, and promote experimental projects in architecture, art, and design. (a83 is also a stockist of The Architect’s Newspaper and AN Interior.) The nonprofit, run by founding members Owen Nichols and Clara Syme, grew out of John Nichols Printmakers & Publishers, which served as the principal printmaker for many architects in the 1980s and 1990s.
According to a83’s Nichols, “a83 is a place where people gather to celebrate this work and spark ideas to inspire future work. We hope this platform is meaningful to the culture of architecture in New York. ArchWork has the potential to reach beyond our audience in downtown Manhattan and to help reinvigorate a market for architectural drawings and prints.”
a83 has made available works from two collections: The John Nichols Printmakers & Publishers Collection (1978-1994), and the A83 Collection (2020-ongoing). The JNP&P Collection contains print editions from architects including Frank Gehry, Venturi Scott Brown, Bernard Tschumi, Martha Schwartz, and Michael Graves among many others. The A83 collection contains works from both well established firms which include MOS Architects, Reiser Umemoto, Young Projects, Young & Ayata, Sean Canty. “At A83 we try to promote and help produce works from newly established practices like Gus Crain, Gore/Hall, Bruna Canepa, Galo Canizares, Sofia Mercado, among others,” Nichols said.
VanDeb Editions, the Women-Owned and Operated Printing Studio
Also on board at launch is VanDeb Editions, which has specialized in fine art etchings and monoprints since 1998. Founded by artist Deborah Freedman and master printer Marjorie Van Dyke, VanDeb Editions has collaborates with dozens of artists to produce top-quality prints for 25 years.
“Prints by architects and artwork that references architecture are an aesthetically smart choice which can compliment any modern discerning collection,” noted VanDeb Editions’ cofounder Deborah Freedman. “They are a good investment because art by accomplished architects and artists only goes up in value.”
Ray New York, Original Art and Limited-Edition Prints from an Artist-Owned Shop
Located on Long Island’s North Fork, Ray is a design shop that features vintage decor, art, and modern objects for the home. For ArchWork, Ray founder and owner Michael Aron has selected original works and limited-edition prints that will appeal to architects and those in the design community.
“The ArchWork team identified an unmet need,” said Aron. “Architects and design professionals in related fields are underserved by the popular art-for-sale platforms. By narrowing the focus to art and prints that appeal to this market, ArchWork is able to offer a targeted collection that saves the audience time and offers items not available elsewhere. By serving up a curated collection of artworks at many different price points, the search process becomes more efficient. Rare, vintage, or limited-edition lithographs and serigraphs hold their investment value in the short-term, and can potentially increase in value over time.”
ArchWork is open for business at archwork.co. More galleries and works will be added to the collection regularly. All artwork is available for shipping.
